Signs and Symptoms of Anxiety Disorders

While it’s normal to feel anxious in stressful situations, persistent or excessive anxiety may be a sign of an anxiety disorder. Recognising the symptoms is the first step toward finding the right support and treatment.

Common psychological symptoms of anxiety include:
  • Constant worry or a sense of dread
  • Feeling restless, nervous, or on edge
  • Difficulty concentrating or racing thoughts
  • Irritability or a short temper
  • A sense of intense fear, even when there’s no clear threat
Common physical symptoms include:
  • Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
  • Tightness in the chest or shortness of breath
  • Muscle tension or trembling
  • Nausea or digestive issues
  • Sweating or feeling unusually hot
  • Trouble falling or staying asleep
These symptoms are often linked to different types of anxiety disorders, including:
  • Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD)
  • Panic disorder
  • Social anxiety disorder (social phobia)
  • Separation anxiety disorder
  • Specific phobias
  • Selective mutism

Psychiatry for Anxiety

Seeing a psychiatrist for anxiety can be an important step in understanding and managing your symptoms. Psychiatrists are medical doctors with specialist training in mental health. They can diagnose anxiety disorders, provide therapy, and prescribe medication where appropriate.

After a full assessment, your psychiatrist will recommend treatment tailored to your needs, which may include:

  • Psychological therapies – such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), exposure therapy for phobias, or other talking therapies to challenge unhelpful thought patterns and help you build coping strategies

  • Medication – including SSRIs or beta blockers, which can help manage symptoms and support longer-term recovery

  • Treatment for co-occurring conditions – such as depression or other mental health difficulties that often occur alongside anxiety

  • Lifestyle guidance – practical advice on stress management, relaxation techniques, and ways to manage anxiety in daily life, as well as in more acute episodes, such as panic attacks

Psychiatrists can also provide professional reports and work closely with other mental health providers to ensure your care is joined-up and supportive.

If you experience anxiety symptoms regularly or find it difficult to manage severe anxiety, speaking with a psychiatrist can make a real difference. With the right support, many people experience lasting relief from their symptoms and regain a sense of control in their lives.

Dr McCann provides expert care for people living with anxiety. Through thorough assessments, he can provide a clear diagnosis and develop a personalised treatment plan tailored to your own personal needs and goals.

Treatment often includes talking therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which helps to identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours that contribute to anxiety. In some cases, medication may also be recommended to support your recovery and to aid in symptom management.
